Los Angeles Fire Protection Company Gives Tips for Hiring a Qualified Inspector
LOS ANGELES AND PLACENTIA, CALIFORNIA— Nationwide Fire Protection Corp. is offering several tips restaurant owners and managers can follow when seeking an expert to perform routine fire suppression system inspections.
Many restaurants have systems that are not up to code and may not provide adequate protection in the event of a fire, said Massoud Farazandeh, general manager of Nationwide Fire Protection Corp., an affiliate of American Professional Services (APS-Hoods). NFP opened a fabrication facility in Placentia in 2009 to better meet the demand for Los Angeles fire protection work.
Restaurants must have their systems inspected every six months, Farazandeh said. When seeking a Los Angeles fire suppression systems company qualified to perform these important inspections, make sure they will perform the following tasks during the inspection:
- Trip the system from the pull station.
- Trip the fire system from the terminal link.
- Visually inspect the cable for the fusible links, brackets, CO2 cartridges, mechanical head and other parts of the fire system.
- Conduct a visual inspection of plenum and ducts to determine the amount of grease buildup that exists.
- Check to ensure there is proper coverage of the nozzles over the equipment.
- Inspect to make sure the nozzles have proper caps.
- Make sure the gas automatic shut-off valve works adequately.
- Make sure the pull pin and the seal are replaced properly and the system is tagged.
Tagging the system shows fire safety officials when the last inspection was performed and also indicates that the inspection was done properly and successfully, unless the inspection company has noted otherwise on the tag or the fire report, Farazandeh said.
It also is important for restaurant owners to have their fire extinguishers inspected routinely to ensure that they are in optimum working condition if needed.
Restaurants need to have Class K extinguishers, which are rated for handling fires that result from cooking with fats or oils. These extinguishers are easy to determine from others because they come in a stainless steel bottle, as opposed to a red one, Farazandeh said.
